Are You Prepared for Spring Mold?
Groundhog day’s come and gone and it looks like we’re predicted to have six more weeks of winter. We are definitely coming up on spring, though. Spring is mold season and mold can be a serious health issue. The best way to deal with it is to prevent it, so now is the time to brush up on the facts.
Why Is Spring Mold Season?
Spring is the time when mold is most likely to be a problem because it’s when the conditions are best for it. It needs warm, damp places out of direct sunlight. In spring, it starts to warm up for winter, so things will be waking from their winter dormancy. Additionally, a combination of snow melt and spring showers will make everything wet. Basement flooding is more common this time of year. If your basement floods, it creates all the right conditions. Not only that, but a lot of porous building materials, like drywall and wood are prime food for fungus. Your basement is everything mold needs to thrive: just add water!
Or don’t add water. That’s a bad idea.
Mold Removal
Mold is hard to remove. While ultraviolet light and certain chemicals will do the trick, mold likes to spread into everything. When it comes to porous substances, there’s a lot of space for spores to seep into and once it gets in, it becomes nearly impossible to get into all those spaces. It can take a lot of work to remove mold and there are many practices – like fogging and bleaching – that either don’t remove it all, or might just cause more damage. Once it takes root, often the only way to get rid of it is remove the infected substances, which makes mold prevention a must.
Prevention
If you’re watching for signs of mold, you can spot the risks. The best way to prevent it is to keep things dry. Without dampness, the spores won’t grow. If you find any dampness in your basement, or anywhere in your house, dry it out immediately.
