Customer Review-Bountiful

Posted By: Bart

"The overall repairs took longer than expected, but that was due to the fact my insurance company held up the process. I feel that Alpine is not at fault and feel that they completed the repairs, when they could, in a timely manner. I am impressed with the quality of work that it took to reconstruct my damaged property and am quite pleased with the outcome. All the staff that worked on this project were friendly and helpful. If needed, I wouldn't hesitate using Alpine in the future. I would also recommend Alpine to others if they were to ever need repairs done to their property for whatever reason."

Alpine's Parade Fire Truck

Posted By: Bart

Chris Harris, owner of Alpine Cleaning and Restoration Specialists, Inc. has purchased a 1948 Chevy Fire Truck! This vehicle will be in all the local Cache Valley Parades to represent Alpine Cleaning and Restoration Specialists, Inc., with a special emphasis on Board Up and Tarp Off Services. The truck was purchased from Fire House Pizza who did the exterior restoration. The Fire Truck was believed to have gone in service in the SLC area back in 1948. It then made its home in Mendon, UT to be their first fire truck from 1974-1986. It was then given to Clarkston City Fire Department who used it as a pump truck for 6-8 years. From there it was moved outside where it got weathered after Clarkston purchased a new fire truck. Mendon Fire department requested it back in hopes of restoring it as a parade truck. The cost was too overwhelming, so when Fire House Pizza approached them to purchase it, an agreement was made. Fire House restored the outside, went through the engine, removed the water tank and put on graphics. Firehouse used it as a parade truck and entered it into the Cache Valley Cruise-in since 2007. After Fire House Pizza sold their Smithfield location to a new owner, Bart Caley heard of the fire truck being for sale and it was perfect for Alpine! Thanks Chris! We will slowly make it look nicer and restore some things over the next years. It is great to have a piece of local history tie into Alpine Cleaning and Restoration and one that complements our services! Fire, Water, Mold, and Storm Damage Restoration- We'll take care of you.

Stop House Windows from Sweating

Posted By: Bart
Window Condensation

Sweating is caused when warm moist air meets a smooth, cool surface. This is also known as condensation. It is the same process that causes the outside of your glass of Diet Coke to become moist.

If you have a problem with the windows in your home sweating, you may think that there is a problem with the windows. However, there may be nothing wrong with your windows as they are not causing the problem.

A simple wall hygrometer may be worth purchasing to tell you the humidity level inside your home. Humidity levels in your home should be between 30 to 50 percent (lower when the temperature outside is colder). When humidity levels exceed this, you will start to see condensation or sweating on your windows.

Alpine Cleaning & Restoration has a few simple suggestions below to keep humidity levels in your home lower and to prevent your windows from building up condensation.

Immediate Solutions to Stopping Condensation on Windows

1. Open the windows and doors to let your house breathe. High humidity is often caused by poor air circulation or lack of ventilation. Opening a window or door will equalize air in your home with the outside.

2. Check that your clothes dryer exhaust hose is free of debris and that it is properly vented to the outside and not the attic. Ensure that vent ducts as short as possible and seal them with foil/duct tape or caulk to ensure that the moisture exits your home.

3. Always turn on a fan when cooking. Also try to minimize cooking times.

4. When showering turn on the exhaust fan and take shorter showers with cooler water.

5. Place a fan blowing onto the window to evaporate the liquid and put it back into the air. Of course, this will only work as long as the fan is turned on. You can also frequently wipe the windows to remove the moisture. This will help prevent mildew or mold from growing.

6. Cover windows with plastic film or interior storm windows. Doing so will provide a layer between the moist warm air and the cold surface.

7. Setting your thermostat lower will reduce the temperature difference between the air and the glass. Temperatures between 66 to 68 degrees are most effective.

Ways to eliminate the problem indefinitely

1. In your bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room install exhaust fans. If possible, install a timer that will keep the fan running for 15 to 20 minutes after you shower to remove any excess moisture. A timer can also be used in the laundry room as well.

2. Invest in double paned windows and/or storm windows. If condensation is still prevalent despite new storm windows, then you need to caulk or weather strip around the two windows.

3. Seal the areas around your window using caulk, spray foam or weather stripping to close any gaps.

4. Reduce the number of aquariums and plants in your house--both add moisture to the air increasing humidity levels. If possible, water the plants in your home less often.

5. Invest in a dehumidifier with a humidistat to keep the humidity in your home between 30-50%. Dehumidifiers are great for bathrooms and basements where humidity levels are highest.

  • If you have a log fire place, make sure to use the screen
  • Never burn wrapping paper, boxes or trash in your fire place

  • Christmas lights that are overheating should not be used
  • Never over fill a turkey fryer with grease

Alpine Cleaning and Restoration Specialists, Inc. knows that fire damage in your home can be devastating. We wish you a happy and safe Merry Christmas!

Winter Season brings fire danger

Posted By: Bart

Holiday Fire Safety

It’s important to keep fire safety in mind during the holiday season to avoid problems. * Trees: Purchase a fire-resistant artificial tree or a fresh, live one and place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. * Lights: Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. * Decorations: Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts are opened. * Candles: Keep burning candles within sight and away from items that can burn easily, including trees, evergreens and other decorations. Always use non-flammable holders such as a fire-safe plate or proper candle holder. * Turkey fryers: Use outdoors away from buildings and flammable materials. Never use on wooden decks or in garages, and never leave them unattended. Follow instructions carefully. In the event of a grease fire, never use water. Immediately call 911 for help, then use the extinguisher.

*Turkey fryer fires are generally caused from too much oil.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

Posted By: Bart

KSL Frozen Pipes Video- Click here on this text

Utah & Idaho residents face temperatures well below freezing in the aftermath of Tuesday night's storm. Here are some tips for protecting pipes. Let water run Temperatures that cold can cause pipes to freeze. Letting a faucet drip during extreme cold weather can prevent a pipe from bursting. It's not that a small flow of water prevents freezing; it helps, but water can freeze even with a slow flow. Rather, opening a faucet will provide relief from the excessive pressure that builds between the faucet and the ice blockage when freezing occurs. If there is no excessive water pressure, there is no burst pipe, even if the water inside the pipe freezes. A dripping faucet wastes some water, so only pipes vulnerable to freezing (ones that run through an unheated or unprotected space) should be left with the water flowing. The drip can be very slight. Even the slowest drip at normal pressure will provide pressure relief when needed. Where both hot and cold lines serve a spigot, make sure each one contributes to the drip, since both are subjected to freezing. If the dripping stops, leave the faucet(s) open, since a pipe may have frozen and will still need pressure relief. Leave heat at or above 55 degrees When away from the house for an extended period during the winter, be careful how much you lower the heat (no lower than 55 degrees). A lower temperature may save on the heating bill, but there could be a disaster if a cold spell strikes and pipes that normally would be safe, freeze and burst. A solution is to drain the water system. This is the best safeguard. With no water in the pipes, there is no freezing. This remedy should be considered even when the homeowner is not leaving but is concerned about a serious overnight freeze. To drain the system, shut off the main valve and turn on every water fixture (both hot and cold lines) until water stops running. It's not necessary to leave the fixtures open, since the system is filled mostly with air at that point and not subject to freezing. When returning to the house, turn on the main valve and let each fixture run until the pipes are full again.

How Often Should You Clean Your Carpets?

Posted By: Bart

Question:

How often should I get my carpets cleaned?

Answer:

Frequently used carpet should be professionally cleaned by a qualified technician at least annually - perhaps a little longer interval for infrequently used carpet and even sooner for carpet in homes occupied by respiratory sensitive or allergic persons; or in homes with indoor pets.

The following chart from the IICRC S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Cleaning serves as a guideline for recommending cleaning frequencies for carpet. They consider traffic, soil rating, vacuuming schedules, spot cleaning schedules, and professional interim and restorative cleaning.

How often should I clean my carpet IICRC chart of how often one should have their carpets cleaned. Alpine Cleaning recommends following this chart.

10 Tips to Winterizing Your Home

Posted By: Bart

Autumn is invariably a prelude to falling winter temperatures, regardless of where you live. It might rain or snow or, as David Letterman says, "Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees." Did you know there is only one state in the United States where the temperatures have never dipped below zero? Give up? It's Hawaii. Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter:

  • 1) Furnace Inspection: Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. Stock up on furnace filters and change them monthly. Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. If your home is heated by a hot-water radiator, bleed the valves by opening them slightly and when water appears, close them. Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.
  • 2) Get the Fireplace Ready: Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. If the chimney hasn't been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. Check the mortar between bricks and tuckpoint, if necessary.
  • 3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows: Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. Use weatherstripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. If your home has a basement, consider protecting its window wells by covering them with plastic shields. Switch out summer screens with glass replacements from storage. If you have storm windows, install them.
  • 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts: If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.
  • 5) Service Weather-Specific Equipment: Drain gas from lawnmowers. Service or tune-up snow blowers. Replace worn rakes and snow shovels. Clean, dry and store summer gardening equipment. Sharpen ice choppers and buy bags of ice-melt / sand.
  • 6) Check Foundations: Rake away all debris and edible vegetation from the foundation. Seal up entry points to keep small animals from crawling under the house. Tuckpoint or seal foundation cracks. Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime. Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation. Secure crawlspace entrances.
  • 7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Some cities require a smoke detector in every room. Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years.
  • 8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes: Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. Drain all garden hoses. Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. Drain air conditioner pipes and, if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees.
  • 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces: Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. Don't automatically remove dead vegetation from gardens as some provide attractive scenery in an otherwise dreary, snow-drenched yard. Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area.
  • 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit: Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

How often should you get your carpets professionally cleaned?

Emergency Restoration Tips

Posted By: Bart

Practical do's and don'ts for restoring your home after damage from smoke and fire, water or vandalism

Smoke and Fire Damage
Do's

* Blow off or brush-vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes, and carpets.
* Cover carpeted traffic areas with towels or old linens to prevent additional soiling.
* Discard open food packages. The food could be contaminated.
* If electrical service is off, clean out your freezer and refrigerator. Leave the doors propped open or place charcoal in the unit.
* Send clothing with heavy smoke damage to a qualified professional dry cleaner.
* Clean formica and chrome fixtures in the kitchen and bathroom to prevent permanent tarnishing.
* Wipe residue from porcelain bath fixtures to prevent etching.
* Wipe the leaves of house plants to remove smoke residue.
* Change the air filter on your furnace if it uses forced hot air.
* Tape cheese cloth over intake and outlet air registers to capture any loose soot in the air. This is even more effective if the cheese cloth is damp.
* If the outside temperature is above 60 degrees, air out the house to reduce smoke odor.

Don'ts

* Do not attempt to wash any papered or flat painted walls without consulting your professional cleaner. Incorrect cleaning procedures could compound the soot residue problem.
* Do not attempt to clean carpets or upholstered furniture. Again, incorrect procedures could increase damage.
* Do not use electrical appliances that have been close to fire or water before having them checked. They could malfunction.
* Do not use ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. A short circuit could result.
* Do not touch anything. Soot on your hands can permeate upholstery, walls, and woodwork, causing further damage.
* Do not eat food that has been exposed to fire or smoke.
* Do not wait to call for professional help.

Water Damage
Do's

* If the outside temperature is above 60 degrees, use dehumidifiers if available.
* Use fans to circulate the air and assist drying.
* Remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting.
* Wipe furniture dry.
* Lift draperies off carpet, loop through a coat hanger, and place the hanger on the drapery rod.
* Prop up wet furniture cushions for even drying and place small wood blocks or aluminum foil under furniture legs.
* Remove wet area rugs or other floor coverings.
* Open furniture drawers, closet doors, and luggage to enhance drying.
* Move photos, paintings, and art objects to a safe, dry location.
* Remove wet fabrics and dry them as soon as possible. Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.
* Remove damp books from shelves and spread out to dry.
* If damage occurs during a cool season, leave heat on; if in summer, use an air conditioner if available.

Don'ts

* Do not attempt to remove chemical stains such as ink or paint.
* Do not operate damaged electrical appliances.
* Do not throw away damaged wood chips or other small articles. They might be helpful for repair.
* Do not use household cleaning products on fabrics, upholstery, or carpet without consulting your professional cleaner.

In an emergency, response is critical to damage mitigation and your satisfaction. Call Alpine Cleaning & Restoration Specialists, Inc. in Logan, Utah 435-563-3707 or Kaysville, Utah 801-546-4600 for prompt, professional service.

This Demo Derby had one of the best showings Cache Valley has seen. This is the first Demolition that Alpine Cleaning and Restoration Specialists have ever been in that didn't involve fire, water, or mold.

Alpine Party at Lagoon

Some of the highlights include, but are not limited to James Hunsaker winning the grand prize- a Nintendo Wii in a raffle, Filipe riding his first roller coaster and the fried chicken company dinner. Each employee was allowed to bring their family, or a date. There was around 130 employees and friends, enough to fill up the Targhee Terrace at Lagoon. Everyone had a good time taking a break from fire, water, mold, and storm damages.

Logan Utah Fire Station

Posted By: Bart

Employees of Alpine Cleaning & Restoration and members of Logan River 2nd Ward were able to take a tour of the Logan Fire Station. The firemen of the station were very kind to take the time to explain all the components of the different trucks to the children. The kids loved learning all about the men who save peoples lives in fires. Alpine Cleaning & Restoration would like to thank the Logan Fire Department for taking the time to give these types of tours to people in the community. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the sacrifices they make for our community.

Alpine Cleaning Solved My Mold Problem

Posted By: Bart

I am a property manager for the Woodbury Corporation. I recently had a mold issue in one of the office buildings that I manage. The tenant in this office building is an extremely important tenant and a very precise one as well and having a mold problem is not acceptable at all. I first contacted a different company to perform the mold abatement process, after completion of their work we performed an air spore test of the area and still showed signs of mold. There were a few concerns of how well the other company did, it was at that time that I contacted Alpine Cleaning and Restoration Services, they responded very quickly to my call and within a day had a scope of work provided to me on what needed to be done. Their scope of work was approved and scheduled that same week, and they began their mold abatement process that weekend. They did an outstanding job on providing ideas on what needed to be done and also went the extra mile for my high maintenance tenant. They were very professional and easy to work with. Mike Vroman was my main contact and I could almost always get a hold of him right away when I called and if not he always returned my calls within the hour. Communication is a large part of this business and they were very great on their end. Most importantly, two days after they finished their mold abatement process we had another air spore test performed and passed with flying colors. I would definitely recommend Alpine Cleaning and Restoration Services to anyone.

Thanks

Alpine Cleans ALL Smoke Odor

Posted By: Bart

On July 25, 2007 we had the misfortune to have our beloved cabin in Cache County struck by lightning and set on fire. There are many miracles associated with the extinguishing of the fire, such as having a cell phone work in order to call 911. It had been dead just minutes before the lightning strike. Also it was wonderful that Cache County's fire trucks there to fight the fire in a matter of minutes.
A further blessing was finding Alpine Cleaning in Smithfield, Utah to clean up the mess and restore the damage. Their crew chief, Zane, was understanding and effective in his efforts to get us back in our cabin in the minimum amount of time.
The extra nice thing about Alpine is the many departments in the company that can do electrical, woodworking and sanitizing/deorderizing. There is NO fire smell now in our cabin because each item in the cabin was taken to a deorderizing room at their factory and thoroughly processed so as to remove all odor.
We are so grateful to them and so glad to be back in our cabin!
Thanks Alpine!

Thank You Alpine

In January 2009 an electric blanket malfunction causing a large fire in my son’s room. Alpine Cleaning, coordinating with our insurance company, spent the next week or so gutting, then rebuilding this room, and thoroughly cleaning the whole house - walls, carpets, cupboards, clothes, bedding. There was no trace of smoke smell or ash dust anywhere in our home. It was beautifully clean! Despite the inconvenience the fire caused our family, we enjoyed everyone we met from Alpine Cleaning, and we were sorry to say goodbye when everything was done. We do not hope for another tragedy, but we would love to see them all again. Jennifer Frost

Andersen Story

Alpine,
Thank you so much for all the friendly and professional service this past month as you, your team, and sub contractors put our home back together after the fire we had.
I was so at ease giving you access to our home. It was never a worry of any kind. Having a fire and losing all the things we have was very stressful for me and my family but you have really helped to turn the whole transition into a winning experience.
I started this letter with thank you, and I will end it with those words. Every time I hear the name Zane (General Manager) or Chad (Technician) I will think of two good men who helped my family during a very hard time in our lives. I put you two down on my personal list of friends.
You do your job with real care and dignity.
Thank you very much!!!
Andersen Family
P.S. I hope you both will always think of us as your friends
